Walking
Step Ahead members can join in on organised walks at all our bases. These take about an hour and offer an enjoyable and social chance for exercise.
Walking is at an easy pace, so that you can enjoy a good chat along the way if you wish. Step Ahead caters to all abilities and lets you take a walk at your own pace. Most of our walks last between 40 and 50 minutes – and are followed by a hot drink and a relaxing chat.

We will sometimes take a walk from our base, and sometimes provide transport so we can walk elsewhere. Members have input on where we go each time, and if the weather isn’t nice enough for a walk, we’ll arrange an alternative indoor activity such as a museum visit.

Walks typically visit nearby parks, lakes, rivers, and other scenic spots, but there’s no limit to walking locations. Here are some of the places we visit most often:

  • Travis Wetlands
  • Local beaches
  • Central City rebuild, Restart Mall
  • Residential Red Zone
  • Styx Mill Reserve
  • The Groynes
  • Hagley Park and Botanic Gardens
  • Riccarton Bush and Mona Vale
  • The Esplanade at Scarborough
  • Halswell Quarry
