Membership

Interested in becoming a member at Step Ahead? If you are aged 18-65 years, experience a diagnosed mental illness, are able to attend and participate independently, we’d love to hear from you! To find out more, our Membership Info Booklet may be helpful.  You can refer yourself, or be referred by your support person or clinician at your request. There is no formal referral form.

Membership Application Process

Step 1: Give us a call on 03 389 4001 or 0800 688 732 (weekdays), or email us: info@stepahead.org.nz. We will arrange a time for you to attend a first visit.

Step 2: Come and visit us. We will talk with you about the membership criteria, philosophy and programme, and answer any questions you may have. You are welcome to bring a support person along.

Step 3: Attend an activity (independently without a support person). You will need to attend at least one activity (preferably onsite) to get a feel about whether Step Ahead meets your needs. You are welcome to attend several groups or activities to help you decide.

Step 4: Come in for a membership interview. The purpose of this interview is to find out some personal information about you, what your interests are and your personal goals. A support person is welcome to attend.

Step 5: After a follow up with your health professional, and provided you meet the membership criteria, your application for membership will be approved.

Step 6: You will receive notification of the outcome of your membership application via a letter, along with a copy of the Members Handbook, at which time the $10.00 annual subscription fee is requested.

To ensure the safety and well-being of members and staff, Step Ahead has some restrictions in its membership criteria. People who exhibit violent or aggressive behaviour, active alcohol or other substance abuse or are unable to attend and participate independently, are not able to be accepted for membership.
