Membership

Interested in becoming a member at Step Ahead? If you are aged 18-65 years, experience a diagnosed mental illness, are able to attend and participate independently, we’d love to hear from you! To find out more, our Membership Info Booklet may be helpful.  You can refer yourself, or be referred by your support person or clinician at your request. There is no formal referral form.

Membership Application Process

Step 1: Give us a call on 03 389 4001 or 0800 688 732 (weekdays), or email us: info@stepahead.org.nz. We will arrange a time for you to visit for a look around.

Step 2: Come and visit us. We will talk with you about the membership criteria, philosophy and programme, and answer any questions you may have. You are welcome to bring a support person along.

Step 3: Attend an activity (independently without a support person). You will need to attend at least one activity (preferably onsite) to get a feel about whether Step Ahead meets your needs. You are welcome to attend several groups or activities to help you decide.

Step 4: Come in for a membership interview. This is an interview to find out some personal information about you, what your interests are and your personal goals. A support person is welcome to attend.

Step 5: After a brief follow up with your health professional, information from your interview is taken to the team meeting, where a decision is made about your application.

Step 6: You will then receive a letter about the outcome of your application.

Step 7: Once your application is accepted, you will need to pay a $10.00 annual membership subscription.

To ensure the safety and well-being of members and staff, Step Ahead has some restrictions in its membership criteria. People who exhibit violent or aggressive behaviour, active alcohol or other substance abuse or are unable to attend and participate independently, are not able to be accepted for membership.

I believe if people start attending from hospital, they are more likely to engage once living in the community. Keep keeping on!

Over the time as I see consumers grow and become more confident, I am amazed. The groups, activities and support given is well received by consumers, and family/whanau. You hold a valuable service, keep challenging.

Step Ahead has been very useful for our family member. It has given her strength and confidence to attempt things she would never have done in the past. She is meeting a lot of people with similar problems to her, and they can face new challenges together and help one another by talking about it.

Your service is excellent, keep up the good work. Being able to engage people into Step Ahead prior to discharge is very useful from our perspective, for the person, and focusses them on the community, not extending the inpatient stay.
