Community Gardening

The Stanmore Road Community Gardens group takes place at the Linwood Resource Centre gardens on Linwood Avenue on Tuesdays at 1pm. We have our own vegetable plots that we maintain as well as helping out generally. The jobs are varied and include mowing lawns, seed raising, harvesting vegetables, thinning out, planting seedlings, etc. We always have a break where we join other volunteers for afternoon tea.

Members who work in the gardens get first pick of the produce from our plots, including silver beet, rhubarb, leeks and spinach. The gardens are also able to supply fresh produce for other members back at Stanmore Road.

Some members involved choose to take responsibility for their own plot and work in the gardens in their own time. Step Ahead members become part of the LInwood Resource Centre community, whether they are tending their own or Step Ahead’s plots.

Step Ahead West has had regular gardening groups at various community gardens over the years. While it isn’t happening currently, this could resume if there was enough interest from the membership.
Keep up the good work, consumer driven organisations are always empowering to clients.

I believe if people start attending from hospital, they are more likely to engage once living in the community. Keep keeping on!

Over the time as I see consumers grow and become more confident, I am amazed. The groups, activities and support given is well received by consumers, and family/whanau. You hold a valuable service, keep challenging.

Step Ahead has been very useful for our family member. It has given her strength and confidence to attempt things she would never have done in the past. She is meeting a lot of people with similar problems to her, and they can face new challenges together and help one another by talking about it.

Your service is excellent, keep up the good work. Being able to engage people into Step Ahead prior to discharge is very useful from our perspective, for the person, and focusses them on the community, not extending the inpatient stay.

I have nothing but praise for Step Ahead . . . The clients I have worked with regarding issues have been treated fairly, with respect and dignity.
